As of late, bad luck has followed Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, as the car company keeps finding themselves in trouble. Just two months ago, the company had to pay a penalty to the federal regulators for the way they’ve handled the recall of their cars. Two months ago and the automaker found itself in another mess, having to recall 1.7 million Ram pickups.
Problems with the Ram Pickups
This month, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled their popular selling truck for three reasons, the airbags, the wiring harnesses, and steering components were all faulty. With the company recalling the Ram 1500, the company is facing a dark future, one that will impact the sales of their other larger pickup trucks, their reputation in the market, and their market share. That’s not the only torment they face this year, as their relationship with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stands on rocky grounds.
The Fall Out Between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and NHTSA
In July, the NHTSA called out the automaker for the manner in which they manufactured the cars, which were not in accordance by the vehicle safety standards. What really angered the NHTSA was how long it took Fiat Chrysler to take action to recall the vehicles, clearly not as fast as the NHTSA wanted them to.
This has left some bad blood between the two, but the ones apologizing for it will be Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Now, it seems as if the NHSTA will be getting the last laugh, as again, the automaker has found itself on the frontlines of another recall. This time around, it is huge.
Vehicles Affected by the Recalls
Amongst the faults noted above, faulty steering wheel wiring harness was the largest cause for the recalls. About 1.1 million Ram pickups sold across North America were shipped back to the company’s headquarters. This issue posed the biggest safety concern to drivers, as it could unintentionally cause the truck’s airbags to setoff. The models that were affected by this issue include the 2012 to 2014 Ram 1500, 3500, and 2500 pickups and 5500, 4500, and 3500 Chassis Cabs. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles havedisclosed that two injuries due to this issue have occurred, but so far, there is no report of any accidents, which is a relief for the company.
The automaker also has plans to recall 190,337 heavy-duty Ram trucks in North America to examine and fix bracket welds that could affect the wheel. They will recall the 2014 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, 2013 Ram 3500 pickups, and 3500 Chassis Cabs. The company knows about one accident that occurred due to a faulty bracket, but no one was injured.
Lastly, the third recall is for the faulty side curtain airbags that if activated during an accident could throw the occupant from the car. The models affected by this recall include 2014 and 2015 Quad Cab Ram pickups. The company has reported that no accidents have occurred.
Since this is a mass recall, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is in the process of alerting all Ram pickup owners.
