Time to Bury Cowboys, Brandon Weeden

CowboysThe Cowboys were expected to survive after Tony Romo suffered a collarbone injury. There was optimism about the Cowboys’ chances and many thought that with the best offensive line in football and a game changer of the ilk of Brandon Weeden with them, Dallas would easily weather the storm and win games in the NFL. However, it seems that the Cowboys are struggling to cope with the loss of Tony Romo and are now dead in the water with the early season promise and optimism all gone down the drain. It seems like another lost year for the Cowboys and it just goes on to show how quickly fortunes change in the NFL.

What’s happened to the Cowboys?

Dallas were already struggling with their running game, before Tony Romo and Dez Bryant got injured, but that would make sense, except for the fact that Dallas had been effective without Romo. The main problem that Dallas has is that they don’t have any vertical threat to keep opposition defenses on their toes, and the return of Dez Bryant is expected to help in that matter.

The performances of Brandon Weeden have also come under scrutiny and although he isn’t making any big mistakes, he isn’t really scaring the opposition or beating anyone. The NFC East is no longer a laughing stock and there are some serious teams that are challenging in the division. This has made things even harder for the Cowboys, which is why their urgency to get their season back on track is greater.

Something positive for the Cowboys

Brandon WeedenThe one positive that the Cowboys do have is that the Seahawks are also struggling. However, Seattle is going to come to Dallas before the return of Romo, which means that it is all set up to be a dagger tiebreaker game. The Falcons and Panthers are also there and it won’t be difficult for either team to win 9 to 10 games. There are some seriously good teams who are already ahead of Dallas and it is going to take some divine intervention to catch them.

An Uphill Battle

The Dallas Cowboys should definitely keep things in perspective, since their schedule doesn’t look easy from here on in. After their win over the Eagle’s and Romo’s injury, there was plenty of optimism around the place, but it was also banked on beating the Saints and the Falcons. With the schedule that Dallas has, the Giants on the road, Seahawks and Eagles at home, then back to back games with the Buccaneers and Dolphins mean that winning 2 games between now and Thanksgiving would mean a good effort by the Cowboys.

This would mean that their season record should be 4-6 before they host the Panthers, and then go on the road to Washingotn and Green Bay. Being 2-1 would be a miracle and the best case scenario would be 6-6 and needing to sweep the Jets, Bills and the Redskins for 9 wins. It is a major battle to pull all those results out of the bag, but crazier things have happened in the NFL.
