Terry Collins makes a brave face as the Mets drop inside unknown territory

Despite seeing his charges fare so poorly in the Game 2 loss at the hands of Kansas City, New York Mets manager, Terry Collins chose not to wallow in despair in front of the cameras. Throughout his managerial career, Collins has never been known to be a guy who would heap huge praise over his players or be absolutely critical of the team when it loses.

While speaking to reporters following the dismal loss in the World Series where the Kansas hitters hit them all over the part, Collins revealed that he had this to say to his players.

“We’ve been here before. We can come back. We’ve done this before. Just remember what we’ve got to do and let’s get after it.”

However, if truth be told, the Mets, especially under Collins, have never been down 0-2 in a world series (or any postseason series for that matter), so they would not really know if they have it in them to turn things around. It’s unchartered territory from here on in.

This clearly means that the Mets will have to find something within themselves if they are really desperate to turn the tables on their victors and get something out of the World Series.

Game 3, which takes place on Friday night, will be a monumental challenge for the Mets. Not only they have to win the game, the Mets will also have to prove that they are not just a good team riding its luck before it ran into superior hitters who make contact more often than not.2

The current roster can still prove that it is worthy enough to be breathed in the same air as the memorable sports champions the city has ever known.

Way back in 1986, the Mets reversed a 2-0 deficit to the Red Sox at the Fenway Park and registered an historic triumph because despite the sheer difficulty of the task, the team remained convinced that it was the more talented team and also knew that it had locked horns with a rather cursed franchise that was always looking to encounter another ghost before it is able to exorcise it.

This year, the Mets won’t have such belief after they were put to the task. Moreover, unlike Red Sox, who carried a heavy legacy luggage that weight them down during the 1980s, Kansas City Royals have no such problems.

Moreover, the Mets would also be aware of the fact that the last World Series team to lose its first two games and still land a triumph was the New York Yankees who achieved this feat back in 1996.

Moreover, just like the Yankees coach Joe Torre, Terry Collins has some big and probably infamous decisions to make. For Ned Yost, putting in a lineup is easy but the same cannot be said of Collins who at this point in time, would be looking to shake things up a bit. And it appears that Collins might make the sort of dramatic lineup change which Torre made all those years ago.

Then again, the Mets are swimming in unchartered waters right now, any unique decision made by Collins, if it pays off, will be remembered in history as a masterstroke from what we still consider as one of the most astute tacticians in the game today.
