Tinder cofounder Sean Rad has announced that he wants to begin collecting art. He told London Evening Standard that he has been spending a lot of money on luxuries like cars, watches, and gadgets. Now, he wants to spend it on collectibles and artworks.
Art dealers have been trying to tap into Silicon Valley’s money for quite a long time. Seattle Art Fair and Art Silicon Valley are a testimony to it. The Art Market Monitor’s Marion Maneker discussed the remark, which Rad made to the Evening Standard on the 18th of November. Matthew Freud, the head of Freud Communications, a UK-based public relations firm, is reportedly Rad’s art advisor.
Considering the fact that Twitter reacts to almost everything, and Twitterattis’ reactions become news, a parody account with the username @TinderGuysArt came as an instant reply. The account publishes pictures of how his art collection might look. There were also pun statements like “it’s time to swipe right on the art world.”
Tinder is owned by the Match Group. The parent company also owns the dating sites Match.com and OkCupid. The stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange for $12 a share on Wednesday. Sean Rad reportedly owns 10% of the company, thus he has enough money to invest in arts and anything else that he would want.
But the interview didn’t end there. Rad has been criticized for some additional, obnoxious comments. He made a public statement about how a very successful supermodel, who is quite famous in the circuit, is begging him for sex. On being asked how he responded to her request, he claimed he is not willing to get in bed with her, because the girl is not smart enough. In fact, he flaunted his linguistic skills with panache too. “I am the person who gets turned on by intellectuals. Apparently there’s a term for someone who gets turned on by intellectual stuff. You know, just talking. What’s the word?” he says. “I want to say ‘sodomy’?”
Knock, knock, Mr. Rad. The word is sapiosexual. And we don’t think the word applies to you anymore.
Mr. Sean Rad is always in the news for his witty and sometimes offensive statements. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is extremely outspoken. Sean has a habit of having an opinion on everything and anything. Some are rather funny and acknowledged by his audiences, but some are just swiped left.
Another question is what kind of art Rad is interested in. Will he go for the cult classic or the random creation? As people wonder about the available ideas, he appears to be the kind of person who would buy a big, shiny balloon dog—pun highly intended.
However, his investment might lead other Silicon Valley techies to invest in art. Till then, we shall let the Twitter accounts and the fans speculate about what might interest Mr. Rad. As they say, it’s never bad to have a good laugh.
