Last week, three people ruled the Christmas weekend. No they are not related to The Star Wars. It was the Miss Universe finale and one glitch due to human error became a highlighting moment in the world. Steve Harvey, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez and Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach witnessed what can be called 5 historical minutes of their lives. This year’s Miss Universe had its fair share of drama ever since it began. The end was nothing short of historical. Comedian Steve Harvey “accidentally” announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the new Miss Universe. The crowning ceremony was almost done when he realized that it wasn’t Miss Colombia but Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who was the actual winner. This has to be one of the biggest on-air blunders ever in the television history. A lot of people will agree that it was the perfect “You had one job” moment.
A closure to a highly discussed event
Following the incident, more attention was given to the glitch than the winner. Memes, jokes, trends and social media trolls broke the internet with analysis and interpretations of the incident. The good news is that things seem settling now. And the best part is that people involved in the incident are trying to do their bit to settle things down. One such initiative was taken by Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach expressed deep and kind words for Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez. She took to official Miss Universe Instagram account and commended the runner-up for being a genuine sport. 26 year old Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach finally talked about the incident and tries to sum up things through this nice gesture. She praised the spirit and strength that Ariadna displayed on-stage.
One message by Miss Universe to fix it all
Through a simple Instagram post and a well-narrated and worded caption, she showed why she deserved the crown. After all to be the one in the whole world, you not only need a beautiful face but an equally big heart too. Her instagram post read, “Wow. Words can’t describe how grateful I am for this. It was quite a journey getting here with 3 attempts at winning Miss Philippines. Now, I finally got the best Christmas gift ever – and not just for me, for my country. I’d like to say thank you to everyone who believed in my potential and those who supported me from the beginning. To everyone who voted for me, especially to my fellow countrymen, thank you. Maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat.”
Continuing her message for Ariadna, she said, “To Ariadna, you are an amazing woman and we are now bonded together forever by a unique experience. In the last 3 weeks we were together, I saw how strong and beautiful you are inside and out. You represented your country with honor and I know how proud everyone must be of you. Fate has a plan for you, and I’m excited to see what’s ahead. And to all the fans who are still fighting about this…Please let’s all stop now. The Miss Universe Organization is about uniting empowered women from all over the world. Arguing and sending hateful messages to each other defeats the whole purpose. You believe in the message of Miss Universe and so do I. Again, thank you for the love. I’m excited to begin my duties as Miss Universe and I wish everyone, all the contestants and all the supporters a great holiday with their loved ones.
