The World No. 1 has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup because of the reoccurrence of the niggling knew injury that is keeping her away from the Tennis court.
Serena Williams has confirmed that she won’t be taking part in the upcoming Hopman Cup as it will risk her participation in the Australian Open. She has been on the road to recovery as her knee injury was healing pretty quickly and it was expected that she will take part in the Hopman Cup. However, she has now opted out from the tournament and will wait to see the condition of her knee before making a decision about her participation in the Australian Open.
The decision was confirmed by the Hopman Cup’s official Twitter account. The account tweeted that Serena Williams has pulled out from the tournament because of a knee injury. She suffered the knock during her first match of 2016 in which she left the court after being a set and 2-1 down. She was playing against Australia’s Jarmila Wolfe.
Serene William confirmed the reoccurrence of her injury and told reporters that she needs a little more time to recover.
“I just have some inflammation that’s been going away very slowly. It is going away but it needs a little more time,” Williams told reporters at the Perth event.
“Usually I’m super-fast and I wasn’t moving the way I like to move. Mainly I was afraid to move.”
She added that she have been practicing really hard in the off season and she has pushed herself to limits. And now she needs some much deserved rest and a couple more days of rest will benefit her a lot as she prepares to take on the best in the business in the first Grand slam of the year in Australia.
“I’ve been training really hard in the off season and pushing myself beyond the limits so a little rest, a little treatment, a day or two off will make a world of difference.
Allaying concerns over her fitness, the World No. 1 stated that it is not a serious injury and she will be back to full fitness real soon.
“It’s not even a bump — just a really minor thing in the road and I’ll fly over it.”
Serena Williams won three grand slam singles titles last year winning Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. She has now won 21 grand slams and would have added another to her trophy cabinet but she was defeated in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.
Serena Williams added that despite the fact that she had a great year in 2015, she will not rest. She is hungry for more success and is looking to have another best year for her.
On a question regarding her participation in Australian Open, she said that she is positive that she will take part in it. However, she added that she is taking things one step at a time and she won’t be making a confirmation straight away.
