The Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas is coming to an end on Saturday. Though not nearly as exciting as last year’s show; the event brought some novel and innovative ideas nonetheless. Below is a roundup of the six most interesting innovations on display. The list is made up of both entirely new concepts and upgrades of existing inventions.
Energous Wattup Wireless Charging
Wireless charging has been on demo for years at CES with no one quite being able to implement it until now. Energous have actualized the idea, albeit imperfectly. The company has designed a wireless chip (3mm by 3mm) that can receive 10 watts of power, thus replacing the need to use a wall socket ever again. The basic idea is that the chip which will be fitted with a transmitter that is connected to your device and receives wireless power from a particular type of router.
Ehang Drone Taxi
This is the next generation of transportation, although you probably won’t be alive to ride in one of them — sorry about that. It is a classy, robotic helicopter is also a passenger-ready drone that will fly you where you want to go at the touch of a button on its smartphone app. It comes with air conditioning and Wi-Fi inside. How cool is that?
LG’s Rollable Display
Forget a flexible AMOLED screen on curved HD TVs. This new gadget from LG is in a class of its own. LG plans to make rolling up a screen as easy as rolling up a newspaper. It is paper thin and a very exciting technology with countless application. Imagine walking with a screen in your back pocket! The technology is still in development, though, and the prototype from LG is very delicate. innovation
Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator
Calling this work of engineering a refrigerator is stretching the definition of what makes a fridge. It has three built-in cameras (yes, cameras) to take a photo of the inside, so that one can see the contents using their smartphones. It has a touch screen where the family can write notes, post photos, and share calendars and artwork. You can stream your favorite music or TV content. It is also IoT (Internet of Things) technology enabled. innovation
The Segway Advanced Personal Robot
This is a joint initiative by Intel, Segway, and Xiomi to make a sort of personal assistant. This intelligent robot is one part hover board (although it does not exactly hover) and one part robot butler. The bot “transforms” to enable you to ride on its two wheels and can then pop out to a cute-looking robot to help with some other tasks, such as carrying groceries or answering the doorbell. This stylish looking bot is something everybody would want to have as their new best friend. innovation
Bang & Olufsen’s BeoLab 90 speakers
Who knew speakers could look so gorgeous and produce such powerful and high-quality sound? These cannons of sound have smartphone-controlled software inside that allows the unit to be operated in different directional modes. You can narrow the sound beam for solo listening and widen for large groups. In each scenario, the 18 drivers inside every speaker behave differently to cancel out reflections and optimize the sound quality. innovation
