Oscars can wait as Leonardo basks in the glory of Golden Globes 2016. As Golden Globes 2016 wrapped up, we all can agree that it was one beautiful night as the harrowing true-life story of a frontiersman’s battle to survive, shone at the gala night. “The Revenant” was awarded the Best Motion Picture Drama along with Leonardo Di Caprio winning the award for the Best Actor Drama and Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Best Director Award.
Golden Globes recap – Ricky Gervais does what he does best and Jennifer Lawrence re’joy’ces
The very adorable Ricky Gervais opened the show with his rather enlightening monologue. That story about three Golden Globes was beautiful. His witty puns and top-notch one-liners made the night all the more interesting. Though what caught audiences by surprise was ‘The Martian’ winning an award in the Best Picture in Comedy/Musical Category. As if the nomination in the category was not enough, the award left everyone amused and exasperated. The award proved that Globes try to honor populist entertainment that audiences loved. Globes’ legacy of bias towards comedy continues this year too.
The most surprising thing about the evening was Brie Larsons’ win as the Best Actress Drama for “Room”. Larson won amongst the strong league of nominations that included Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander. Graced by the Golden Beauty was another stunning actress and award stage regular, Jennifer Lawrence. She won the Best Actress in A Musical/Comedy award for her controlled and charismatic performance in Joy. She defeated an ensemble of competitors like Amy Schumer, Melissa McCarthy, Maggie Smith and Lily Tomlin.
Kate Winslet proves what makes her eternal is her talent
Kate Winslet won the prize for the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal for the long-suffering Apple executive Joanna Hoffman in the intriguingly theatrical study of the Apple founder Steve Jobs. Winslet’s performance was par excellence and she truly deserved the award for being the scene-stealer she is. “Inside Out” won in the animation category over Charlie Kaufman’s remarkable stop-motion animation “Anomalisa” which was beautiful beyond words and imaginations and shall be considered as an epic already.
Though, one thing that Golden Globes achieved righteously was rewarding László Nemes’s drama “Son of Saul” as Best Foreign Language Movie. The movie was set in the dreadful horrors of Nazi death camps and narrates the story of a prisoner who comes across a body that he is convinced is of his dead son. Rewarding this remarkable story was one of the most exemplary decisions that Golden Globes Committee took. Apart from this, the 87-year-old Ennio Morricone seems to be old but is still alive and kicking with his creativity. His background score for Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” was diligently honored. It was well-deserved and one of his best works till date.
With “The Revenant”, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Leonardo DiCaprio getting their due honors and The Martian becoming a joke in the Comedy category, it can be concluded that the Golden Globes night was indeed a grand one.
