Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party has announced to seek his party’s nomination for the 2016 presidential nomination.
Former two-term GOP governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, made an announcement on Wednesday during an interview on Fox Business Network. He was also a nominee in 2012 and he is looking once more to run for the President. Johnson presents himself as a fiscally conservative-socially liberal candidate and an alternative to the presidential candidates from the other two major parties in the US, the Democrats and Republicans.
The former New Mexico governor has received criticism for his nomination straight away with people stating that he would pull votes from Republicans in the running. However, Johnson has rebuffed such claims and has defended his decision to stand up. Talking to reporters, he said that it is not the case that I would pull votes from Republicans alone. He added that his presidential bid will draw as many votes from the Democrats as it would do from Republicans.
“When it comes to Libertarians, Libertarians draw as many votes from Democrats as they do Republicans.”
Johnson, who is a self-made millionaire, dropped a number of hints on social media in the last few weeks about his plans to run for the president. His presidential run in 2012 was not as sweet as he had imagine. Despite getting 3.5 percent of the votes in New Mexico, he failed to attract voters across the country.
Johnson is a pro-pot politician and was the CEO of Cannabis Sativa Inc. until Monday. He has resigned from his post in order to pursue this political opportunity. However, it is not going to be a smooth sail for Johnson as another member of the Libertarian Party is seeking the nomination of the Party in the form of John McAfee. McAfee is the 70 year old cyber security pioneer and he along with more than 12 other candidates would prove to be hurdle in the way of Johnson in seeking Libertarian Party’s nomination for the President.
In past, Johnson has fought against the marginalization of legitimate third-party candidates. In an interview he slammed the media attention given to the Republican candidate. However, he is adamant that he will make a strong case for Libertarian Party in the 2016 elections since there is a lot of time left in the elections.
“There’s no advantage of making it official given what I’ll call the clown-car …given the attention that’s being given to the Republican side,” he said. “Let that stuff sort itself out and there’s plenty of time for the general election.”
Republican candidate, Donald Trump, has received all the media attention this time around through his controversial agendas and plans. He is running for the President with the slogan of making United States great again. He is facing stiff competition from Democrats’ candidate, Hillary Clinton. The case of Gary Johnson will add another twist to the Presidential race and it is bound to affect the position of the two parties.
