Calvin Johnson plans to retire

Detroit Lions’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson has made his intensions clear of hanging up his boots after telling head coach about his decision when 2015 season ended.

Calvin Johnson had already told his close friends and family even before the start of 2015 season about his intensions of calling it quit at the end of the season. And he followed up with his plans of retiring from the game as he told head coach, Jim Caldwell along with the rest of the organization that he wants to retire. He broke this news a day after the regular season ended.

Johnson was however advised to not rush into making such a big decision by the coach Jim Caldwell. But a person close to the player has revealed that Johnson has already made up his mind and he is content with it. It would be very difficult now to persuade him otherwise. He plans to retire and he will, no matter how much pressure coach and other players put on him to no take this decision.

The Lions are however hoping that ‘Megatron’ will help change the mind of Johnson. The club has showed great respect for Johnson over the years and they are not planning to push him too far to change his mind. The club stated that a player of Johnson calibre knows his body pretty well and his decision will be respected no matter what. But they are hoping that their prized asset continue his journey with the club.

“We obviously have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision to give proper thought and consideration to his football future,” the Lions said in a statement at the time.

Calvin Johnson said in a statement after the end of the season that he will be taking the next few weeks to access the situation. He added that he is the twilight years of his career and is not ruling out the option of retiring.

“Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future. I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future,” Johnson said after the season ended.

Johnson decision to quit may have a lot to do with his injuries record in the recent years and keeping that in mind, he would be pretty reluctant to carry on with his career. He has played in nine NFL seasons and he has dealt with a number of ankle injuries in addition with general soreness throughout his body over the years.

Calvin Johnson is set to be a future hall of famer as he has enjoyed a stellar career with the Lions in the NFL. He has been a three-time first team All-Pro and has been selected to the Pro Bowl a record six times in his career. Johnson also holds the NFL single-season record for receiving yards when he had 1,964 in 2012. He has 731 career receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdown catches.
