Wayne Rooney used to go to major tournaments feeling the weight of a nation on his shoulders. ”I had to be the one to win us games, to win us tournaments,” the England captain said Thursday, opening up on his run of disappointing showings at World Cups and European Championships since 2006. Henry aimed a header at the goal that was popped in by teammate Nadia Nadim in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Red Stars, and Portland remained the only undefeated team in the National Women’s Soccer League. Henry is arguably the biggest star from Europe to join the NWSL as it plays out its historic fourth season.

(Reuters) – Angel Di Maria is working hard on his fitness for the chance to play a part in Argentina’s Copa America Centenario final against title holders Chile on Sunday after bad luck in two previous finals. Di Maria, nicknamed “Fideo” (noodle), is desperate not to lose out on the East Rutherford showcase after missing the 2014 World Cup final through injury and having to come off after half an hour of last year’s Copa America decider in Chile. The last two, I couldn’t, let’s hope this is the definitive one,” said Di Maria, who scored Argentina’s first goal of the tournament in a 2-1 group stage win over Chile.

In five transformational years, Wales and Northern Ireland have gone from playing in front of 529 fans to preparing for a British derby in the 45,000-capacity Parc des Princes in Paris. The start of the knockout phase is unchartered territory for Wales and Northern Ireland as they make unexpected progress on their debuts in UEFA’s continental showpiece. Few will relish facing Bale.
