The magic of Harry Potter is showing no signs of slowing down as J.K. Rowling announced plans Thursday for five films in spinoff franchise Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
The first film—a prequel to the Harry Potter books and movies starring Daniel Radcliffe—is due for release in November. It stars Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne as magical explorer Newt Scamander, who travels to New York to uncover a world of witchcraft and wizardry in the U.S.
Rowling, who makes her debut as screenwriter on the movie, made the announcement at a special event held in London Thursday.
“We always knew it was going to be more than one movie, and we said a trilogy as a placeholder. But I’ve done the plotting properly and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be five movies,” she said.
Redmayne teased that Rowling “has the most extraordinary imagination of our generation and she has created something entirely different. That world is spilling out of her head in a unique way.”
Fantastic Beasts is directed by David Yates, who helmed the final four Harry Potter movies. He is expected to return for the sequel.
On Twitter Thursday night, Rowling defended stretching the spinoff series to five instalments. She tweeted to one fan:
Rowling is also behind the recently launched Harry Potter stage play, Cursed Child, which is set some 19 years after the final Potter story, The Deathly Hallows. Rowling co-wrote the West End production with screenwriter Jack Thorne and theater director John Tiffany.
