Republicans to Meet amid Turmoil after Kevin McCarthy’s Exit from Speaker Race

Kevin McCarthyPaul D. Ryan is being courted by House Republicans who have been left in turmoil after Kevin McCarthy’s exit from the speaker race. This has made the G.O.P incredibly desperate in its race to elect a new speaker of the House and everyone sees Paul D. Ryan as the perfect representative. However, Mr. Ryan seems to be disinterested in taking up his position as the speaker of the House and this has further intensified the desperation for the Republicans.

Mr. Ryan is seen by Republicans as the perfect candidate for the job and party leaders are growing increasingly worried that the uncertainty could spill into their 2016 congressional and presidential campaigns. This is why so much urgency is being exhibited to persuade Mr. Ryan to run for speaker at this time. Mr. Ryan however, has decided to return to his family and his advisers in order to discuss his future and also watch the Packers game on Sunday.

His Biggest Influence

Biggest Influence

It is said that his wife Janna, has the biggest influence over his decision. She has previously worked as a lobbyist and a lawyer in Washington, before she moved to her husband’s hometown in order to raise their children. Mr. Ryan, 45, is being put under increasing pressure by his Republican colleagues, conservative leaders and the party elders.

Even though everyone believes that Paul D. Ryan is the perfect candidate, his advisors and close associates have cautioned that he simply has no interest in fighting for the job and will only accept it by acclamation. An official who is close to Mr. Ryan stated that if the conference is unanimous in their decision that they want him, he will probably accept it but as of yet there is no confirmation regarding what Mr. Ryan plans to do.

There have been a lot of hardliners who have spoken with great admiration about Mr. Ryan but there are also those who are not too keen with the idea of simply handing over the speaker’s position to him. Most people are seeing the departure of Mr. McCarthy and the resignation of Mr. Boehner as a success, and have pledged to make changes in House rules, weakening the leadership and empowering the rank & file members.

Other names thrown into the hat

The Freedom Caucus, which has around 40 members, has announced its support for Daniel Webster, a lawmaker from Florida, who no one has heard about before. They have backed him for the position of speaker and will continue to do so until other candidates emerge and are interviewed by the group. Regardless of the procedural changes, it is clear for all to see that the Republicans are now facing a serious leadership crisis.

This has put even more pressure on the hardliners who are facing intense pressure to get behind Mr. Ryan and elect him as speaker. Some of the names in the running for speaker have already stated that they would happily yield to Mr. Ryan, as they see him as the most qualified person for the job. However, Mr. Ryan is also adamant that he doesn’t want the speaker’s job and declared that in a statement, which has left the party confused and in disarray.

It is clear however, that the Republicans are growing increasingly desperate and it is clear for all that they badly need Mr. Ryan.
