Canada enters a promising new era as Justin Trudeau comes into power

The political Junkies in Canada and around the world are intrigued by the impending arrival of Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister. This is simply due to the fact that Trudeau has been an amateur boxer, has a tattoo on his body, and proposes legalizing marijuana. After the Liberals painted the country red on Monday, many of the political junkies turned to Google to find about more about Canada’s new premier. For people who’ve been unable to do that, here’s a brief look into Justin Trudeau’s life.

Justin Pierre JamesTrudeau was born as Justin Pierre James Trudeau on Dec. 25, 1971, in Ottawa to former Canadian Prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Margaret Joan Sinclair. Pierre Elliott married Justin’s mother Margaret Joan Sinclair when he was partway through his first term as prime minister. Before they separated in 1977, Justin’s parents had two other children. Justin’s two siblings are Alexandre Trudeau and documentary filmmaker, Michael Trudeau.Kyle Kemper and Alicia Kemper, from his mother’s second marriage; and Sarah Coyne, whose mother was in a relationship with Justin’s father are Trudeau’s three half siblings.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau wasn’t the only politician in Justin Trudeau’s family.James Sinclair, Justin’s maternal grandfather, served as fisheries minister in Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent’s Cabinet. The baby-kissing Scottish immigrant and Rhodes Scholar, James Sinclair is also Trudeau’s political role model. Justin Trudeau at 43 will be Canada’s second youngest prime minister in history. The youngest was of course Joe Clark who toppled Pierre Trudeau in 1979 at the age of 39.

Justin Trudeau is married with three children. Trudeau first met his wife Sophie Grégoire when he was a child. However, their first meaningful interaction took place in 2003 when the two crossed paths at a charity ball. At the time,Justin Trudeau was an entertainment reporter. Soon after the charity ball confab, Trudeau and Grégoire started dating and eventually tied the knot on May 28, 2005, in Montreal’s Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church.

Today, Trudeau lives at 24 Sussex Drive with his wife Sophie Grégoire and three children Xavier James,Ella-Grace Margaret, and Hadrien. The couple’s first son Xavier was born in 2007, their daughter Ella-Gracefollowed in February 2009, and they welcomed their youngest son Hadrien in February 2014.Shortly after he won the Liberal leadership in 2013,Trudeau with his family relocated from Montreal to Ottawa’s Rockcliffe Park neighborhood.

Canada’s new premierIt wasn’t until 2007 that Trudeau made a move into politics. At the time he won the nomination in a poor Montreal district that the separatist Bloc Quebecois held power over. The prodigal son did not have a carpet rolled out for him. He had to contest the nomination within his own party. Although the liberals lost in 2008 and suffered their worst ever defeat in 2011, Justin Trudeau managed to win a seat for himself on both occasions.

In 2011 it seemed like the Liberals gave little importance to youth and ethnic voters. Trudeau sought party leadership to change allof that. He won it easily in 2013 and immediately made a vow to take on the Harper Conservatives. It didn’t take Trudeau long toovertake Harper in popularity. This came as a big surprise to the conservatives as they considered Trudeau a ‘lightweight’.

To the surprise of the conservatives and many others, Justin Trudeau came from a position of a relative outsider just a few months ago to claim a stunning victory in Canada’s federal elections on Monday. As Justin Trudeau comes into power, Canada ushers into a new era—an era that is filled with promises of a whole new world!
