It is quite clear that the San Francisco 49ers are ready to make the big decision of rebuilding their roster from top to bottom and are brave enough to let go of some big names in a bid to freshen things up. And it appears that Colin Kaepernick might not be spared either, with the Milwaukee native already benched by Jim Tomsula in favor of Blaine Gabbert.
As the season matures, it is looking more and more likely that the 49ers will not be starting with the six-foot-four quarterback. With his well-documented struggles over the last two years, the QB is still likely to attract a decent amount of interest this offseason on the trade or even free agency markets.
Back in 2012, Kaepernick was perhaps the most difficult players to defend in the league after he led the 49ers to the 2012 NFC title. However, the player’s form has suffered a dramatic dip since then, and it is clear that a parting of ways could be a real scenario in the near future. For the past two weeks, the QB has been benched, and it is clear that his San Francisco adventure is coming to an end.
However, despite not being valued at the 49ers anymore, there are still a few teams who would love to get their hands on him and possibly help him revive a career that promised so much yet delivered little.
Washington Redskins
Over the course of the season, it has become clear that Kirk Cousins may not be the long-term answer to Washington’s problems, which clearly means that the Redskins will be in the market for a new quarterback this offseason. While Kaepernick is in a similar mold to RGIII (who might have played his last game for Washington), the Washington coaching staff would be drooling over the possibility of getting their hands on a QB whose raw, physical ability and arm strength will help general manager Scot McCloughan cough up the right money for his services.
New York Jets
Minus their quarterback conundrums, the Jets boast probably the strongest overall roster in the league, and head coach Todd Bowles and General Manager Mike Maccagnan will not be against the idea of improving their fortunes in the quarterback position this offseason. However, the Jets are unlikely to sign Kaepernick without a contract restructure.
Philadelphia Eagles
Here at the Trendler, we believe that out of every team in the country, it is the Eagles who could be the perfect home for Colin Kaepernick, and we are willing to bet our marbles on the QB playing for them in 2016. Considering Chip Kelly’s offensive scheme, Kaepernick, with his dual threat skillset, looks like a guy made to play for the Eagles. Moreover, the Eagles have more than enough salary cap to get their hands on Kaepernick. However, the only issue that could arise would be to see if Kelly will be able to help Kaepernick fit into the footballing philosophy he is trying to preach in Philadelphia.
