The stage for Grammys’ has been set and Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd have a reason to rejoice. All the three artists ruled the nomination charts and have a spot on Album of the Year nominations. Taylor Swift has made a huge space with ‘Blank Space’ as the track has been nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year as well. Lamar’s ‘Alright’ made it to the nominations for Song of the Year. The Weeknd’s ‘Can’t feel my Face’ has made a spot for a Record of the Year nomination. The 58th annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS on 15th of February.
Big Names Fight It Out At Grammy
The Album of the Year category will see some big names battling it out. We have “1989” by Taylor Swift, “To Pimp a Butterfly” by Lamar, “Beauty Behind the Madness” by The Weeknd, “Traveller” by Chris Stapleton and “Sound & Color” by Alabama Shakes fighting for the title. The Song of the Year has Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’, Lamar’s ‘Girl Crush’, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s ‘See You Again’ and Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’. Swift and Sheeran also appear with similar tracks on Record of the Year category. Other tracks that challenge Record of the Year category are; ‘Can’t feel my Face’ by The Weeknd, ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson and ‘Really Love’ by D’Angelo and Vanguard.
The Best New Artist category has all the debutantes who made it big this year. We have Courtney Barnett, Meghan Trainor, Tori Kelly, Sam Hunt and James Bay fighting with each other for the coveted title. Audiences are still wondering that how Taylor’s “1989” made it to the 2016 ceremony when ‘Shake it Off’ was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in the 2015 Grammy as well.
The reason is that the album was completely released on October 27th, 2014. This made it ineligible for the event last year and hence the album turned out as a frontrunner for the 2016 event.
Lamar and Swift Lead the Nominations
Kendrick Lamar leads the charts with 11 nominations in total. He made it to the Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Collaboration and Best Music Video. Swift and Lamar fight the most intense battle with Swift having nominations under 7 categories. The two even form a part of the same team for two awards; Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video for ‘Bad Blood’ remix. His ‘Never Catch Me’ is also nominated under Best Dance Recording category.
For all those wondering why there is no ‘Hello’ from Adele in the category, the stunner of a song couldn’t make it due to the cut-off date. The cut-off this year for Grammy was 30th September 2015. And that is why, ‘Hello’ stands ineligible for the February 15th event. The Best Alternative Music Album category again has Alabama Shakes’ “Sound & Color” contesting alongside Björk’s “Vulnicura”, Wilco’s “Star Wars”, Tame “Impala’s Currents” and My Morning Jacket’s “The Waterfall”.
The Best Rap Album category boasts versatility as J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Dr. Dre’s Compton, Drake’s If You’re Reading This Its Too Late stand against To Pimp A butterfly by Kendrick Lamar and The Pinkprint by Nicki Minaj.
Missing from this year’s nomination were some of the big names in the music industry including Beyonce and Rihanna.
