So what was the most Christmassy thing you did this Christmas? This is one question that most of the people hate answering. But then, there are some people who take up the feels and incorporate themselves in it. Some of the music artists did the same and released their new songs on Christmas.
They gave their fans a Christmas gift but the thing is it was not necessarily happy one. A lot of music that was released exclusively on the eve of Christmas carried a feeling that is exactly opposite of the festivity. This new music by coveted artists like Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd was dark, defying and vague in nature. The lyrics oozed of sadness and gloom. Also, most of the songs had special mentions of the mighty friend, Marijuana. Here is a review of all the new music that was released around Christmas.
Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd do what they do best – Be themselves
The first artist to surprise was Miley Cyrus, no more known as Hannah Montana. Now, we all know, if it’s Miley, it’s not going to be mainstream. She took help from her friend Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and released “My Sad Christmas Song”. The track has references of being sad on a Christmas and being sexually attracted to Santa. (Why are you surprised? It’s Miley after all).
The Weeknd released two songs this Christmas in collaboration with Future and Jeremih respectively. We all know how The Weeknd hails melancholy and sadness. In fact, they do it so often that they have kind of become synonymous with it. The song has some real dark lyrics that talk about infidelity and disturbed relationships. The song has some major weed reference with the lines, “Everybody getting high/Getting high, getting high, getting high”. The second song is a remix of Jeremih’s ‘Pass Dat’. The song is about getting high in a strip club and that basically says enough about the song. Also, the title says, Pass Dat. Let’s not just discuss about the weed reference as it says it all.
Three words: Thank you Radiohead
And now here is the best of all. This song is like that Christmas gift that makes your entire day, month and year. The reasons are simple; first of all, it is Radiohead and second of all, it’s Thom Yorke. Radiohead released the song that they were told to make for Spectre. Thom Yorke announced on Twitter that though the song did not make it to the final cut (a thing that only makers can answer), it became something very personal and hence they have planned it to release on Christmas. All fans can say is, ‘Thank You Thom Yorke’. The song is so sad that it makes you feel connected and is borderline gorgeous. No specific weed reference and yet the song has all the potential to make you feel high on sadness. Maybe, the song was way too good for a James Bond flick. We will never know.
Amidst all the sadness, Green Day surprisingly came up with a radiant, happy Christmas Song in “Xmas Time of the Year”. This is their first song after 2014 and it is weird to put Green Day and happy and song in a single sentence. The song talks about gratitude, friends and festivity.
