HMR Weight Management Services (HMR), a subsidiary of Merck, has been named a No. 1 Best Fast Weight-Loss Diet in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Diets of 2016 rankings. This is the first year U.S. News has published the Best Fast Weight-Loss Diet category.
“HMR programs excel at providing the jump start many people need when beginning a healthier lifestyle program,” said Carol Addy, M.D. MMSc, Chief Medical Officer at HMR. “A common misconception is that losing weight quickly is not healthy, not sustainable, and will just lead to future weight re-gain. To the contrary, numerous clinical studies demonstrate that following a lifestyle change program which promotes fast initial weight loss can result in better long-term success.”
During the ranking process, reporters and editors from U.S. News & World Report created in-depth profiles of 38 diets. A panel of nationally recognized experts on diet, nutrition, obesity, food psychology, diabetes and heart disease rated the diets on their effectiveness.
“The Best Diets rankings are designed to help consumers identify a diet that suits their specific weight and lifestyle needs,” said Angela Haupt, senior health & wellness editor for U.S. News & World Report. “This year we published the Best Fast Weight-Loss Diet category because we recognize dieters may have short-term weight goals and need options to accomplish that in a healthy way.”
A number of other top-ranked diets on the U.S. News list focus towards transforming everyday eating habits, instead of following a prescribed diet. The rankings are based on evaluations by a panel of doctors, nutritionists and other health experts. For example, U.S. News & World Report has named the DASH diet as the best for shedding excess pounds.
DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) was developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to help people prevent high blood pressure. The plan focuses on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while lowering salt. Besides being named Best Diet Overall, DASH also got first place in the category of Best Diets for Healthy Eating.
The MIND diet is ranked No. 2 on the Best Diets Overall list. It combines the DASH approach and the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes more fish, olive oil and nuts. The MIND diet was developed by researchers at Rush University Medical Center. It focuses on foods within these two diets that influence brain health.
For a lower carb diet, The Glycemic-Index Diet makes the list. However it is a bit hard to follow, but in order to follow this approach more simply as well as effectively well-known obesity researcher David Ludwig of Harvard Medical School has put forward some valuable suggestions.
In his new book, Always Hungry? Conquer Cravings, Retrain Your Fat Cells & Lost Weigh Permanently, Ludwig argues that the body doesn’t handle all calories equally. “The type of calories we eat can affect the number of calories we burn,” he writes. He points to a weight-loss study published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, that found people on a low-carb diet burned about 325 more calories a day compared to those on a low-fat diet.
