Governor of Maine issues apology for racist comments

The Governor of the US State of Maine has issued apology for his comments about drug dealers impregnating white girls.

The controversial governor of Maine has made another gaffe by stating the drug dealers having names like D-Money are out their impregnating white girls. His spokesman however, has claimed that Mr. LePage was not talking about a particular race and his comments has been taken out of proportion.

“I was going impromptu and my brain didn’t catch up to my mouth,” Governor LePage said on Friday.

The governor further added that he meant to say Maine women but instead he said white women.

“Instead of Maine women, I said white women … If you go to Maine, you can see it’s 95% white.”

LePage’s opponents have slammed the governor for making such comments and has termed the remarks ‘fear mongering’.

Governor LePage was talking to a town meeting in Bridgton. He described out-of-state drug dealers as the guys with weird gangster like names such as D-Money, Smoothie, and Shifty. He left everyone in shock when he said that these gangster like drug dealers are impregnating white girls whenever they get time.

Lance Dutson, a moderate Republican activist, came hard on LePage for making this statement. He called this statement one of the most blatantly racist statements ever made by the governor.

“This is one of the most blatantly racist statements he’s ever made,” said Lance Dutson.

North-east States have seen a rise in drug crimes in recent months. The use of heroin in particular has grown significantly recently and that has worried the policymakers. It has emerged one of a major issue in the upcoming US presidential race with candidates making strong statement about drug control and treating addicts.

LePage’s spokesman, peter Steele, tried to clear what is the stance of governor on heroin addiction.

“Race is irrelevant,” Mr Steele told the Associated Press. “What is relevant is the cost to state taxpayers for welfare and the emotional costs for these kids who are born as a result of involvement with drug traffickers.”

The governor of Maine is famous of his straightforwardness and blunt talk. He has made a number of controversial statements in the past as well. Once, he told President Barack Obama to go to Hell. That is not all, during a heated argument, he told the members of a state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to kiss his butt.

In a report last month, it was revealed that drug related deaths have soared in New Hampshire. According to a detailed report on this topic, the influx of cheap heroin has claimed victims from every section of society in the region of New Hampshire. The state is in dire need of help against the overflow of cheap drugs in the market.

BBC’s Franz Strasser also explored the origins of the epidemic and the daunting impact of these drugs on youngsters and their families in his two-part series on the issue.
