Hijab has been a point of discussion since ages. There have been discussions about its righteousness and its existence has always been debated by the fashion industry. Well, Dolce & Gabbana has decided to embrace the much debated attire. The coveted fashion house will be launching a collection of hijabs and abayas. Their target customer group will be the wealthy Muslim women in Middle East. The debut line will have headscarves and the loose full-length outer garment. The Italian luxury fashion house has tried and experimented to a great extent with the attire.

Dolce & Gabbana glamorizes the attire with elegant designs

The Hijabs will be in elegant fabrics like sheer georgette and satin weave charmeuse fabrics. D&G signature laces will be used to add more panache to it. The collection was revealed on the Arabian edition of Style.com. The fashion website reported that the designs appear to feature a lightweight and dramatic drape. Adding more glamour and glitter to the designs, the D&G spring collection will have hijabs printed with daisies, lemons and red roses. The co-founder of the luxury brand, Stefano Gabbana, took to his own Instagram account to announce the latest collection and used the hashtag #dgabaya. The label has not yet released any information about how much the pieces will cost or in which regions the garments will be available. The line received mixed reaction and was praised by many. Ladies called the collection beautiful and elegant and praised the move.

However, there were people who ditched the idea and called the move nothing more than a marketing gimmick. This is not the first time that brands have targeted the Muslim women and have released a collection completely centered on them. Luxury brands like DKNY, Oscar de la Renta, Tommy Hilfiger, Mango and Monique Lhuillier have produced collections that included flowing gowns and wide-leg trousers. The collection is often sold around the festive season of Ramadan. Muslim Fashion Bloggers have been collaborating with brands and have been producing similar collection. British Fashion Blogger, Dina Tokio launched a scarf collection with liberty. The fashion market has also seen an increase in ‘halal’ beauty products such as water-permeable and wash-off nail polishes.

Fashion Industry changes as Muslims form a major customer base

Dolce & Gabbana is one of the first luxury brands to create a collection with nods to Middle Eastern Culture. They have tried to address all the specific needs of Muslim women and have designed traditional pieces like abaya and the sheyla headscarf. Muslims are one of the most important consumer base for the fashion industry. In 2013, Muslims spent $266 billion on clothing and footwear. As per Thomson Reuters, this amount is more than the total fashion spending of Japan and Italy combined. The report says that by the year 2019, the spending is expected to reach at a whopping $484 billion. The Japanese clothing company Uniqlo recently launched a collection by the Muslim fashion blogger Hana Tajima. The collection includes loose blouses, skirts and dresses along with the more traditional kebaya and hijab.
