Jada Pinkett Smith is miffed and she has some very right reasons to do so. The actress took to social media on 16th of January and expressed her disappointment over the lack of diversity and racism at this year’s Oscar nominations. She is angry and annoyed at the committee for not having any black actor in the major nominations. So she might not attend the Oscars this year? We have to wait for the answers. In a series of tweets, Jada Pinkett Smith lashed on the academy for not having any black actor nominated in the top categories.
Smith takes to Twitter to put her point
Smith tweeted, “At the Oscars . . . people of color are always welcomed to give out awards . . . even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment, J.” This is the second year in a row that Oscars Nominations excluded the black performers from crucial categories that includes Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor or Best Supporting Actress. As soon as the nominations were announced, Twitteratis outraged over the bias. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite started trending too.
People were also shocked by the fact that Will Smith has not been nominated for his brilliant portrayal of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a brilliant forensic neuropathologist. He was a likely contender for the Best Actor award and was also nominated at the recently held Golden Globes. Smith has been nominated earlier for an Oscar in 2001 and 2006.
Host Chris Rock is also miffed and joins the voice
It is not just Jada Pinkett Smith who was miffed by the nomination announcements. Host for the Oscar 2016, Chris Rock also questioned the lack of diversity on Twitter. He posted a 15-second promo clip on Twitter with the caption, “The #Oscars. The White BET Awards”. According to him, he will be hosting a different award ceremony. The comedian and actor posted the promo video to watch the annual prestigious ceremony.
Looking at the nominations, one can see the specific exclusion of people of color. The list is an all-white list and includes Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Sylvester Stallone, Rachel McAdams and Kate Winslet. There were nominations to the likes of Mexican director and three-time Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu and the rap biopic Straight Outta Compton but that was the only diversity available. People commented on social media to comment directly or in jest about lack of diversity among this year’s nominees.
Rev. Al Sharpton joined the wagon and said, “Hollywood is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher up you get the whiter it gets and this year’s Academy Awards will be yet another Rocky Mountain Oscars. Yet again, deserving Black actors and directors were ignored by the Academy—which reinforces the fact that there are few if any Blacks with real power in Hollywood”. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has not commented on the criticism.
