Kendall Jenner’s new Mango campaign faces backlashing

As a model, Kendall Jenner’s growth as the model has been remarkable. She has been scoring big fashion camps, gracing ramps for big names and has been the most sought after model for 2015. Her Instagram has been one of the most stalked and followed accounts. In latest news, Kendall Jenner has scored for another big fashion campaign. The 20-year-old model is the new face for Mango’s 2016 spring collection. She has definitely scored big with her new fashion campaign. But the way the entire news has brought heavy criticism on her and the company is shocking. Well, Jenners and Kardashians can handle all kinds of publicity but this has been rather surprising.

Kendall Jenner is back in News. This time she is facing major backlash for the new Mango campaign that she is a part of

Mango 2016 spring collection sparks debate

Kendall Jenner has recently shared a video from the shoot for Mango’s 2016 spring collection. The shoot that was photographed by David Sims in London last month was posted on Instagram on Wednesday. Kendall Jenner looked absolutely flawless and gorgeous. So what exactly caused the uproar and outrage? Well, the problem was that she has been modeling an African savanna-theme based collection called ‘Tribal Spirit’.

As per the company, they did not imagine this to be a problem when they hired her. “We thought that she was the best model to embody this trend. And obviously the upside with that is that, as a model, she’s very professional. She works fantastically. As a celebrity, she has huge repercussions in the market and among her followers”, said Mango vice president Daniel Lopez. The company admires Jenner and her talents.

People take on the company on Social Media

Though the collection will not be available before February 1, the announcement and social media buzz is causing some problems. There are some repercussions that Mango wasn’t expecting. People on social media took to various platforms and questioned the Spanish fashion house for its casting decisions. And it is not just Mango that is facing all the questioning and judging but also Kendall Jenner. Twitter and Instagram users are directing their disdain at Kendall Jenner. People said that both the model and the fashion house are to be blamed for their decision. They have said that it is a lapse on Mango’s part and Kendall is equally responsible for being a part of the campaign.

This is not the first time a fashion house is being questioned for its unreasonable and asymmetrical casting. Situations like these have been common in the fashion industry and people have been questioning the decisions. Valentino was recently criticized and chastised when it put up an African-themed spring collection without a single model of the color.

Unintentional or intentional, racism refuses to leave the roots of the fashion industry. Even when the collection needs models of various race and ethnicity, designers prefer big names and avoid the rather technical glitch. Another recent case was Dolce and Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection. A lot of people were offended when models walked down the runway in clothing and accessories covered in blackamoor imagery. Avoiding cultural appropriation, while sticking to the favorites is no more appreciated by the industry and the present-day consumer. It is also disappointing to the audience and the designers.
