Pentagon to send more troops to Iraq

Pentagon is planning to send addition troops to Iraq to fight against the Islamic State in order to capitalize on the setbacks Daesh has suffered in recent months.

While Obama administration promised to withdraw US troops from Iraq, Pentagon has promised to send addition troops to the war ridden country. There has been massive pressure on the United States to do more in the fight against ISIS, a terrorist Jihadi group that has taken several parts of Iraq and Syria. While Syria in being taken care by the Russia in collaboration with Syria ruler Bashar al-Assad, Iraq has been left on the mercy of those terrorists.

Obama and his government had promised to bring back its troops from Afghanistan as well as Iraq during his tenure but that now seems to be a pretty distant possibility. With Obama set to step down in the end of this year, it is hardly possible that the US would be bring back their troops from Iraq in particular under such circumstances.

In a meeting of anti-Daesh coalition earlier this week, Ashton Carter met with members from UK, Australia, Germany, Netherlands and Italy in order to device a better strategy to strike ISIS down. The meeting concluded with an argument that Arab countries fighting against ISIS need to play a more active role in the fight if peace is to be prevailed in the Middle East.

“I want to hear from my counterparts over the next couple of days – how can we get them in the game. I have long said that Arabs and Sunni Arabs need to get in the game,” Defense Secretary Carter reiterated these comments after the meeting.

Michael Fallon after the meeting told reporters that the main objective of having this meeting was to find the right sort of balance in their strategy against ISIS. He said that Daesh is currently on the back foot and it is the need of the hour that we do not let them gain strength again.

“The object of today is to satisfy ourselves that the balance of the campaign is right…and that we can now capitalize on the setbacks Daesh has suffered in Iraq and move on to tighten the noose around the head of the snake in Syria in Raqqa,”

While US Secretary of Defence has called for Arab states to be more involved in the fight against Daesh, he has also confirmed that the United States is planning to accelerate their fight against the terrorist group in the Middle East. He gave a clear indication that Pentagon will send additional troops to Iraq to aid the ones already fighting the menace there. He added that the fight against Daesh consists of various factors that include airstrikes, Special Forces operations, cyber tools, intelligence and military equipment.

“We’re doing this by providing a plan, clear leadership and the power of a global coalition wielding a suite of capabilities [that include] airstrikes, special forces, cyber tools, intelligence, equipment, mobility and logistics, and training, advice, and assistance,” Carter said.
