Didier Drogba to return to Montreal Impact

The Impact president has confirmed that the former Chelsea player will return to the club when the season starts and will see out his contract with the MLS franchise.

Didier Drogba’s future in the United States has been under the clouds of uncertainty after reports emerged that the Ivorian in considering hanging up his boots in order to join Guss Hiddink’s coaching staff at his former club, Chelsea. The former African player of the year was seen with the current Chelsea boss recently and there were reports claiming that he has been offered a job in the coaching capacity by the Chelsea manager. Coaching has always remain a passion for Drogba and it was being feared that the Montreal Impact player will terminate his contract with the club to join Hiddink’s coaching team.

However, Impact president Joey Saputo has now confirmed that their star player will be returning to the club for the beginning of 2016 season, putting an end to uncertainty revolving his future at the club. Although the president is not sure about the frame of mind of the player when he returns. Talking to media, Saputo stated that Didier Drogba is a professional player and he has zero doubts in his mind that the player will return on time. However, he added that with a coaching offer on the line, it remains to be seen in what frame of mind Drogba would be when he returns.

“I expect for him to come back, he’s a professional. I expect for him to come back with the right intentions,” Saputo said. “But at the end of the day, we’ll see when he comes back.”

The president added that he spoke to the former Chelsea player and they had a long talk about the possibility of Drogba quitting in order to pursue his dream of becoming a coach. However, Didier Drogba has a contract with Montreal Impact for 18 months and he is committed to that according to the president. Saputo further added that the Champions League winners with Chelsea just needed a little bit time to free his mind and clear the dust amid all that was going on in the media.

“He spoke to me about the possibility of his post-soccer career and going into coaching and what not, but he was committed to a contract, and he was aware that he was committed to a contract, so he just needed some time,” Saputo said.

The president said that he is pleased to inform that Drogba will be returning to MLS and he will play a major role for Montreal Impact in the coming season.

“I’m happy that he decided that honor the contract that he has and come back to Montreal.”

Didier Drogba is set to join teammates on February 15 to join Montreal Impact for the second phase of the ongoing preseason training camp. The former Cote de Ivory international is currently in Qatar along with his personal trainer in order to stay in shape and prepare for the upcoming season in the MLS.
