“Be whatever you want, unless you can be Mark Zuckerberg, then be Mark Zuckerberg.” This can be a new mantra, considering the way the Facebook founder is gaining followers. He is many things rolled in one: a successful entrepreneur, a newbie at fatherhood, a millionaire, and a selfless human. To add to this extensive list is fashion icon. That heather grey hoodie and dad jeans accompanied with Adidas shower slides define how normcore can be cool. He has ditched all the things that encapsulate work wear and set up new trends. It’s informal but not whacky. It’s comfortable but not crass.
Silicon Valley and Mark Zuckerberg: the new fashion icons
And maybe this is the confidence that compelled Uri Minkoff to present a collection that was inspired by Zuckerberg’s wardrobe. His designs at New York Fashion Week: Men’s Fall 2016 collection is minimalism at its best. Uri Minkoff, women’s designer Rebecca’s brother presented to the fashion world a ready-to-wear collection for the first time ever, and it was highly inspired by Silicon Valley. “When designing this collection I was like, how can I get tech guys to start dressing like this? I’m a big techie and worked at a software company for 10 years. So it’s about moving forward,” said Uri Minkoff.
When asked if there was something he wanted to improvise on specifically, Minkoff said that he had one important question, “How could I help Mark Zuckerberg up his shoe game?” He particularly is not a fan of Mark Zuckerberg’s slides and would prefer to change them to something modern and stylish. To incorporate the desired change, he tried a few different slip-on shoes. They were fur-lined shoes that resembled Ugg boots but were cropped at the ankle. There were Union and Upton shoes that were more of an albeit stylish footwear.
Improvised footwear and glittery bags
“You see people wearing very casual slippers in Silicon Valley, so it’s like, how could you clean it up and make it more luxurious to step up your game slightly?” explained Minkoff. He also believes that the new shoes could be worn with jeans, slacks, or with a suit. “I want to up that Silicon Valley mentality,” he further explained. He revived pretty good ideas from Zuckerberg’s plain dressing. The line he presented at New York Fashion week had apparel items that ranged from slick, tailored trousers with a cool electric blue stripe, to outerwear that came in peacoats, leather jackets, and overcoats, all inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese design.
The most dynamic part of the collection was bags, well apart from the footwear. That is where a lot of the fashion element was added. “It gives a different depth of dimension. I’m trying to create this universe where you can feel like an individual in your own sense,” he said. “This great pop of purple or gold changes and shifts the whole outfit. I need to make a dad bag version of it for him. I need to do that, like, right now,” explained Minkoff. The bags were in sparkly shades of purple, gold, and blue. Zuckerberg can try these glittery options, though.
