2016 will be a year to remember for MLS as several world class players are set to make their debut in Major League Soccer this season.
After signing the likes of David Villa, Kaka, Frank Lampard, and Giovinco in the winter before the 2015, MLS fans were once again not left disappointed by the clubs after many high profile players signed for their clubs this year last time. They were in aww to see the likes of Didier Drogba and Andrea Pirlo come to MLS.
And once more, the fans are in for a treat this time around with a number of world class proven players ready to set their mark in the Major League Soccer. The biggest names of the all is Ashley Cole, the former England International and Chelsea players, who has won so many titles during his time in England. After cutting ties with Chelsea, he moved to Serie A but did not enjoy his time there after a troublesome campaign in Italy. He has now signed for LA Galaxy joining his former International teammate a captain Steven Gerrard.
Another famous player to join in the United States’ very own, Tim Howard, who has left Everton Football Club and will be joining Colorado Rapids. Although his signature has not been confirmed yet by the club but he is reportedly has signed a multi-million dollar contract with the MLS franchise. Another big name joining the MLS ranks this season is Italy international Antonio Nocerino, who will be playing for Orlando City after joining from AC Milan.
Although the number of big names coming to MLS this time is comparatively less than the last two years, but MLS commissioner Don Garber has assured fans that they are not steering away from their policy of bring in star players to America. Talking to reporters, he said that there are complications when it comes to signing big players and there are a number of elements that come into play in this regard.
“When we were signing named designated players people were concerned that we were just going for their names,” MLS commissioner Don Garber told Goal USA. “Then we invest deeply in the middle or our rosters, and I think people should really be focusing in on the fact that we’ve made a very concentrated strategic commitment to players six through 10, which will ultimately allow us to be more competitive, particularly against Mexico in the (CONCACAF) Champions League as soon as we get that schedule right.”
“The teams that are signing the big-named players all have three DPs,” Garber said. “People say we’re moving away from (high-profile) DPs, but who is going to sign them? The big spenders all have three DPs already.
“When LA (FC) comes in you can be sure they’re going to be bringing in a bunch of DPs. When Miami comes in you can be sure they’re going to be signing some big DPs.”
