Blondes Aren’t Dumb, Science Proves Once and for All
We’re all familiar with the stereotype of the dumb blonde perpetuated in movies like Legally Blonde and Clueless. And while few people would probably claim it’s statistically true that blondes have lower IQs, research has shown that we do subconsciously judge blonde women as being less intelligent. So, scientists decided to put the baseless stereotype to the test. In a new study, researchers found that women with blond hair actually have slightly higher IQs than the rest of the population. The study, published in Economics Bulletin, compared people with different hair colors’ results from a 1980 Armed Forces Qualification Test, which measures reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning. The average IQs were 103.2 for blondes, 102.7 for brunettes, 101.2 for redheads, and 100.5 for women with black hair. These differences are small and aren’t statistically significant, but the fact that blonde women came out on top does shoot to hell the notion that they’re at the bottom rung of the intelligence ladder. “I don’t think you can say with certainty that blondes are smarter than others, but you can definitely say they are not any dumber,” says Jay Zagorsky, an Ohio State University professor who authored the study, in a

The Majority of Americans Are Unhealthy, Scientists Say
Here’s something that will not shock you: Scientists say the four basic behaviors that constitute a “healthy lifestyle” are a good diet, moderate exercise, a recommend body fat percentage, and not smoking. Check these four boxes and you’re protecting yourself against heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, and setting yourself up for many healthy years. So here’s the shocking part: A mere 2.7 percent of U.S. adults make the grade on all four measures, according to a new study from researchers at Oregon State. That’s right: If you’re like 97.3 percent of the population, you’re not as healthy as you think. Even the researchers were shocked with the dismal results. “The behavior standards we were measuring for were pretty reasonable, not super high,” senior author Ellen Smit said in a statement. “We weren’t looking for marathon runners.” How did so few people make the cut? Smit and her team drew data on 4,745 people, tracking their activity with an accelerometer, measuring their body fat with sophisticated X-ray technology, watching their diet, and confirming their smoking status with blood tests. (This is important because many studies rely on self-reporting—and, duh, people fudge the truth about their habits.) The exercise

Is It Healthier to Follow a Raw Food Diet?
With the backing of celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Amanda Seyfried, and a slew of fitness bloggers, it’s hard not to wonder if the raw food diet is something worth looking into. Not familiar with the concept? The gist is that in order to preserve all the nutrients in your food, you shouldn’t heat it above 118 degrees. But how true is this concept, and is the effort of going on a raw food diet worth its benefits? According to celebrity dietitian Isabel Smith, R.D., the raw food trend may be more of a passing craze than a nutritional necessity. “Although much attention has been on raw diets and their benefit, research is finding the benefit to cooked vegetables when it comes to nutrient availability too,” she says. “There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to raw food versus cooked food in terms of health and nutrition,” agrees dietitian Tali Pines, R.D. “Some foods are healthier when eaten raw, while others have nutrients that are enhanced through the cooking process.” Whether you should eat your vegetables raw or cooked, for example, depends what nutrients you need. Vitamin C, fiber, folate (found in beets), and myrosinase (found in

Why You Should Eat the Avocado Seed
It’s a pretty common move among avocado eaters: You slice up the green part and chuck the seed in the trash. But one food blogger says we should rethink that habit. In a new blog post and video that’s gaining a lot of attention online, blogger Sophie Sonnenwirth of Nourish Me Whole argues that we should be eating the avocado seed in addition to the rest of the fruit (yup, avocados are technically a fruit). She even offers up tips on how to do it, although she acknowledges that avocado seed-eating is a “controversial topic.” But…why should we be eating the seed again? According to Sophie, the seed is the most nutrient-dense part of the avocado. She’s right, says Samuel Accardi, lead dietitian for health solution management company the Charge Group, who says he also eats the avocado seed. “The seed holds 70 percent of the avocado’s antioxidants, which include the polyphenols that are found in green tea,” he says. Among the other perks of avocado seed-eating, per Accardi: The seed contains a lot of soluble fiber, which is great for the prevention of heart disease, and also may help with wrinkle prevention. “Studies have shown that avocado seed

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Knows Her Diet Is Crazy-Strict, but She Swears by It
Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is opening up about her strict diet. And, according to her, it’s hard as hell—but she feels amazing. Huntington-Whiteley says she follows naturopathic doctor Nigma Talib’s diet plan, which eliminates dairy, gluten, sugar, and alcohol. “It’s been really tough,” she http://www.eonline.com/news/751130/rosie-huntington-whiteley-s-new-diet-find-out-what-s-making-her-feel-better-than-ever http://www.eonline.com/news/751130/rosie-huntington-whiteley-s-new-diet-find-out-what-s-making-her-feel-better-than-ever”>tells E!. However, she says, it’s also been “transformative” for her. “I can feel it in my skin, I can feel it in my body, I feel lean right now, and I feel strong and I feel energized,” she says. Of course, it’s also really, really strict (and props to Huntington-Whiteley for being honest about it). “I miss a lot of things,” she says. “I miss a glass of wine, I miss my cheese plates, and I miss my croissants.” While tough, New York City registered dietitian Jessica Cording says it makes sense that the supermodel would feel good on the diet. “A lot of people find they feel better on this kind of restrictive diet because you tend to seek out more whole foods and less processed things,” she says. “The less junk going into your system, the better you feel.” And if you suffer from a gluten or dairy intolerance it will help

Kim Kardashian News: What’s Kim Kardashian Eating to Lose the Baby Weight?
Following the birth of baby Saint West in December, Kim Kardashian has been open about her struggle to lose the baby weight—for the second time. She recently announced via her app that she’s already lost 42 pounds, but still has 28 pounds to go. Kim’s been a fan of Atkins for ages, as we knew: She was open about using the diet lose weight after giving birth to daughter North, and in January she tweeted that she was partnering with the brand. “It works for me!” she says. So what are the rest of her secrets? Kim’s nutritionist, Colette Heimowitz, VP of nutrition and education at Atkins Nutritionals, chatted up Redbook and spilled. Kim, who’s losing about two pounds a week, is sticking to 1,800 calories a day—just right for a breast-feeding mama—says Heimowitz, and she chooses those calories carefully: Every meal includes protein, which she pairs with high-fiber foods (we love barley!) and healthy fats (olive oil, avocados). What she’s not eating: “Sugar, sweets, cakes, crackers, white flour, white rice.” One thing she’s not giving up? Cheese—just a little bit. Heimowitz told Redbook that Kim’s daily diet breaks down to: “four to six ounces of protein, four ounces of

A Fitness Test You Can Give Yourself
You sprint and squat all over town, but do you ever stop to think about what all of that sweat is actually doing for your body? While almost all exercise is good for you, understanding your strengths and weaknesses is key if you’re looking to create change and make progress (and avoid injury!), says Refine Method founder Brynn Putnam, a Harvard-educated former pro ballerina who applies the latest exercise science to the smart training offered at her three New York City workout studios. “While an athlete can measure progress through wins, the average exerciser isn’t training with a clear finish line and they’re also generally using poor tools, like the scale, to gauge success,” she explains. “You have to first clarify what your goal is in a specific and measurable way and then create a plan to get from point A to point B.” Ready to start? Putnam created this set of nine exercises that addresses all of the important components of fitness (and demo-ed them for us at her West Village studio). “These exercises are things that we feel like the average person should be able to do in order to be a healthy, functional human being,” she says.

Yup, Laser Vaginal Tightening Is a Thing. Here’s What It’s All About
It’s no secret that having a baby can stretch things out below the belt. And, according to Khloe Kardashian, her sisters have found a nonsurgical way to tighten it back up. “My sisters, they’ve had kids, and there’s a vagina lasering thing to tighten,” she said on a recent episode of Kocktails With Khloe. “So in my household, all they do is talk about this vagina laser. It’s like their discussion back and forth.” It sounds crazy, but vagina lasering, known in the medical community as laser vaginal tightening, is a thing. In fact, there are several FDA-approved treatments marketed under names like FemiLift and IntimaLase, which are designed to tighten up the vaginal area using, yep, lasers. According to the website of Alma Surgical, which makes FemiLift, the procedure is a “state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive outpatient solution that incorporates CO2 laser technology to provide optimal results for various feminine concerns.” In addition to firming up your vagina, these lasers also claim they can fight vaginal dryness and incontinence. They may even help fight a low libido, although that claim isn’t verified by the FDA. So…how does it work, exactly? Cindy Barshop, founder of VSPOT MediSpa, a women’s health clinic that

Adele Speaks Out About Pressure to Breast-Feed
While many celebrities have been outspoken about the benefits of breast-feeding your baby (Olivia Wilde was even photographed breast-feeding her young son in Glamour’s September 2014 issue!), Adele wants women to know that there’s no shame in opting to give your baby formula either. At a recent concert in London, the singer took a moment to acknowledge the struggle many mothers face, acknowledging that breast-feeding isn’t as easy as others may make it seem. “Breast-feeding mommies? You know what, it’s fucking ridiculous,” she said. “All those people who put pressure on us, you can go fuck yourselves, all right?” Her comments were likely directed at fellow Brit Jamie Oliver, who recently encouraged more women to breast-feed their babies, calling it “easy,” “very natural,” “more nutritious,” and “better.” The chef has already received no small amount of backlash over his comments from women who didn’t breast-feed (either by choice or by necessity), and now it seems Adele is joining the throngs. “It’s hard,” Adele said in London. “Some of us can’t do it. I managed about nine weeks with my boobs. … All I wanted to do was breast-feed, and then I couldn’t. And then I felt like, if I was

Why This Guy Always Carries Tampons (and Thinks Other Men Should Too)
During a recent trip to the gym, college student Chance Ward overheard a woman ask her friend if she had a spare tampon. When she realized he had witnessed the conversation, she seemed embarrassed and apologized—but Ward wanted her to know she didn’t have to be sorry for talking about tampons or needing one in the first place. In fact, he had one of his own to offer…in a fanny pack. In a Facebook post that earned 37,000 comments, he made a very fair point: “Why don’t y’all love y’all friends that menstruate? Like, men will make whole guest rooms in their house just in case someone needs to stay. But God forbid that person menstruate, because I bet [there] won’t be no extra pads or tampons under that guest bathroom sink.” (

Why Are People So Obsessed With Hemp Milk?
If you follow health food bloggers on Instagram, you may have noticed uptick in hemp milk hashtags and photos recently. People have been posting photos of everything from hemp milk lattes to actual bottles of the stuff. Healthy living fan Hilaria Baldwin even said in a recent interview that she gives her family hemp milk, which she calls the “richest” kind of milk that “doesn’t have a lot of junk in it.” But why are so many people into hemp milk? And is it really better than cow’s milk and the other milk alternatives out there? First, the basics: Hemp milk is made from hulled hemp seeds, water, and (usually) a sweetener. “Its claim to fame is the high amount of omega-3 fatty acids—one cup can provide close to an entire day’s recommend intake,” says registered dietitian Alissa Rumsey, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to decrease bodily inflammation and protect against heart disease and certain cancers, so that’s a big plus for hemp milk. “Hemp is also one of the few vegetable foods that supplies complete protein, meaning it contains all of the essential amino acids that our bodies

Whoopi Goldberg Wants to Use Cannabis to Cure Your PMS
Every month, my period eats up about three to five days of my general grooviness. Day one, for all intensive purposes, I’m a bitch. Day two, I’m nauseous, I’m tired, and, understandably, still bitchy. Day three, all of the above turns into background noise when juxtaposed with a lower-back and abdominal pain that is so strong that my legs legit. go. numb. (I always thought it was karma, you know, for being such a bitch.) Then, and only then, do I actually get my period, which lasts another three days. Throughout the whole ordeal, I’ll pop whatever over-the-counter pain reliever I can get my hands on. If you’re like me—or worse!—listen up: There’s a new line of all-natural products designed to help you feel less shitty on your period, and it involves cannabis and Whoopi Goldberg. Intrigued? We spoke with Goldberg—a self-professed pot smoker—about the project. “I have a daughter and two granddaughters who inherited my horrific menstrual cramps,” says Goldberg, 60\. “Being a pot smoker for years, I talked to a lot of men in the marijuana business about developing something for period relief, and they always came back with ‘That’s too niche a market.'” Wait, what? “I know!

Adele’s “Pregnancy Beard” Is a Thing: Here’s Why It Happens
It’s no secret pregnancy does weird things to your body. Among other things, you can suddenly have acne-prone skin like a teenager, hate foods you once loved, and have weird hairs sprout up out of nowhere. Adele is getting real about those challenges—at least the weird hair part. The singer revealed at a recent concert that she “grew a beard” while she was pregnant with her son, Angelo. “When I got pregnant, I had so much testosterone in me that I grew a beard,” she told the audience, per the U.K.’s The Mirror. “It’s actually true. I’m not telling a joke. I actually have a beard, but I’m proud of it. I call it Larry.” Adele isn’t the first celebrity to say she grew facial hair while pregnant—Drew Barrymore announced in 2013 that she “got a wonderful little goatee” during her pregnancy. While it sounds hilarious (provided it doesn’t happen to you), experts say this is a legitimate phenomenon that occurs with pregnant women—and it happens more often than you’d think. “This is very common,” says Denny Martin, D.O., an assistant professor and associate chair of the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology at Michigan State University. According

These Runners Refueled Themselves Post-Marathon With…Soap
If you have any plans to host a marathon, here’s a tip: Maybe don’t give exhausted runners goody bags containing soap. Especially if the soap’s packaging looks uncannily like an energy bar’s and is written in a language they don’t speak. That’s what just happened in south China, where Qingyuan marathon runners received bags containing fruit-scented soap after finishing. According to the Chinese paper People’s Daily, a whopping 12,000 runners sought medical care after the race, and packages of soap with bites taken out of the bars were scattered on the side of the road. If you check out the photos, it’s easy to see their mistake. The packages have pictures of grapes on them and are shaped rather like energy bars. Plus, the writing is in English. As one commenter put it, “PR nightmare. No. 1: Cannot read ENGLISH! No. 2: You are stupid enough to put fruits like grapes on the cover? And No. 3: Who puts soap in a gift bag after the race? I smell after a race, but I want liquids ASAP, not soap!” It really was an odd choice, since it’s not exactly customary to rub soap over yourself while you’re still at

People Are Drinking Vinegar for Weight Loss. Is That Really a Good Idea?
You may have seen someone talk about it on Instagram, or even spotted a vinegar drink in the beverage section of your local health food store. Suddenly people are all about drinking vinegar for weight loss. Vinegar isn’t exactly the tastiest thing you can sip, so where did this idea come from? It seems to stem from a small study published in 2009 in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry that found that obese Japanese adults who drank up to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day lost two to four pounds after 12 weeks. It’s hard to tell what’s behind the sudden increased interest in the concept, but dietitians aren’t convinced this is the way to go. “There may be some truth to it aiding weight loss, but it is not magic,” says registered dietitian nutritionist Beth Warren, author of Living a Real Life With Real Food. Here’s how it works, per Warren: Vinegar converts some of the starch in a carbohydrate to fiber, which is not digestible, lowering the amount of carbs actually absorbed by your body, as well the glycemic index (i.e. how much carbs impact your blood sugar). If your blood sugar doesn’t experience

How to Tone Your Obliques So They Look Amazing
Taylor, Zoë, and J.Law show off some serious side abs. Cutout tops and dresses are everywhere these days, which is excellent news for one very good reason: Toning your obliques—the outermost muscles on each side of your core—is much faster and easier than getting flat abs. Another bonus to targeting this spot: “Defined obliques are like contouring for your waist and make you look slimmer overall,” says Dalton Wong, founder of London’s Twenty Two Training, who has worked with Jennifer Lawrence and Zoë Kravitz. Wong gifted us with four ultra-effective moves; do them daily (and aim for one high-, one medium-, and one low-intensity 30- to 60-minute cardio session each week), adding another set whenever the moves start to feel easy. “You’ll see and feel results almost immediately,” Wong says. We like that—ooh, and that peekaboo top too. 1\. Side plank with knee raise Lie on left side with forearm on the floor, elbow under shoulder, and feet stacked. Lift hips and reach right arm toward ceiling; hold. Bring right knee toward chest, as shown. Return to start. Do 10 reps. Switch sides; repeat. 2\. Seated rotation Sit on floor with shoulders back and knees bent, holding a single

These Fast Foods Take the Least Amount of Time to Work Off
You’re already well aware that cheeseburgers and fries aren’t exactly health food. And you probably also know that there’s nothing wrong with having them every once in a while. When you splurge, you want to enjoy it—and you should. But, if you’re looking to indulge in fast food that won’t take you eons to burn off, a genius new calculator from health website Home Remedy Shop has got your back. To use it, simply enter in your weight and pick a fast food restaurant you’re curious about. Then, choose the foods you like the most to see how long it will take to work them off. According to our sleuthing, these are some of the easiest fast foods to burn off: McDonald’s six-piece chicken McNuggets (40 minutes of running or one hour of dancing) Dunkin’ Donuts chocolate frosted doughnut (38 minutes of running or 36 minutes on cardio equipment) Taco Bell black-bean burrito (48 minutes of biking or an hour of rollerblading) Starbucks Grande Skinny latte (15 minutes of biking or 40 minutes of yoga) It’s no shocker that a skinny Starbucks latte won’t take long to work off, but it made our day that the same is pretty

Headache Medications for Pregnancy May Be Unsafe
Figuring out exactly which drugs are safe for pregnant women has always been tricky; after all, researchers can’t just ask moms-to-be to try something out during their super-important bump months. That’s why it’s not surprising—but still a little alarming—that new research shows that medications and treatments doctors have been greenlighting for pregnant and breast-feeding women might not actually be safe. For the review study, researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center examined four treatments that are widely used by pregnant women and long considered safe. Problem is, more-recent research has raised concerns on all four—but doctors haven’t gotten the message yet. Magnesium, once considered one of the safest supplements during pregnancy, is now rated at level D (“may not be safe”) by the FDA. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), used by 65 percent of women during pregnancy, has been linked to a child’s development of ADHD. Ondansetron, which is frequently prescribed off-label to treat both migraines and morning sickness, has recently raised concerns about fetal and maternal safety. And a small study suggests that Butalbital, a barbiturate frequently prescribed for pregnant migraine sufferers, ups the risk of congenital heart defects. All this sounds scary, but the truth is, we just don’t yet

The Pill Horror Stories: Women Share Their Worst
The odds are pretty high that you’ve heard at least one horror story about the Pill before. In fact, you may even have one yourself. Now, women are going on Twitter to share their crazy Pill horror stories. It all started after U.K. journalist Holly Brockwell revealed that she’s been fighting the British health system to be granted sterilization, only to be told she should just take the Pill. But Brockwell said on Twitter that, among other things, the Pill left her legs feeling weird, leaving her worried about life-threatening blood clots. In solidarity with Brockwell, stories about spider veins, depression, and more have shown up, all with the hashtag \#MyPillStory. Here are a few highlights (or, rather, lowlights): Got spider vains all over my legs & felt ugly.My doc just said its part of da deal.I found alternatives. But spider vains stayed \#mypillstory— Anna Gro (@mmrwnnsrgnt) April 3, 2016 Headaches, severe mood swings, nausea, vomiting and the autoimmune issues I have were all gifted to me from hormonal bc. \#mypillstory— Haley Stewart (@HaleyCarrots) April 4, 2016 Ok here’s \#mypillstory – I was depressed to the point of contemplating suicide for 6 months and cried every day. Your Mom Was Right: You Should Eat More Peas
Peas aren’t exactly the sexiest food out there, but new research has found that adding more to your daily diet can pay off in the long run. A meta-analysis of 21 clinical trials published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who added just 3/4 cup of peas, beans, chickpeas, or lentils (collectively known as “pulses”) to their daily diet lost about a pound after six weeks without consciously changing up anything else they ate. While losing a pound over six weeks doesn’t sound like a ton, they also kept the weight off—and that can add up over time. Registered dietitian nutritionist Beth Warren, founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living a Real Life With Real Food, says it makes sense. “Because [pulses] have both protein and unique fiber, they can keep a person full and satisfied, both key components to weight loss,” she says. The fiber in chickpeas, beans, peas, and legumes is especially helpful for weight loss, says certified dietitian-nutritionist Lisa Moskovitz, R.D., CEO of NY Nutrition Group. “Fiber is a nondigestible zero-calorie carbohydrate that not only helps regulate digestion, and regulates blood sugars, but it also does wonders for your waistline,”

Is It OK to Date Your Personal Trainer?
Rumors are abounding that Hilary Duff has been dating her trainer Jason Walsh, founder of L.A.’s fitness hot spot Rise Nation. Duff has been sweating at his private training studio, the Rise Movement, for about two years, so it’s safe to say the pair know each other pretty well. While Duff is far from the first star to date her trainer—Princess Victoria of Sweden actually married hers, and Madonna’s ex-trainer Carlos Leon is the father of 19-year-old Lourdes—it might not be the best idea. “When a professional relationship becomes romantic, the risk of conflict and challenges in the relationship can increase dramatically,” says Joseph Cilona, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist and relationships expert. Not only can a trainer put their job at risk if their employer has a policy against dating clients, the client runs into a murky ethical spot of paying someone they have a romantic relationship with, which has icky connotations. Plus, even more than other professional/client relationships, a trainer and a client have an, ahem, intimate bond. For one, people often seek out a trainer when they’re dealing with body insecurities, which is sort of an odd place for romance to spark. For another, you’re not their

Lady Bits: The Zine That Helps Women Embrace Their Vaginas
Female genitalia isn’t always looked at in the most positive light—but one woman’s homemade zine is setting out to change that. Rachel Rolseth created the 36-page booklet Lady Bits to teach women of all ages about their bodies and encourage them to feel good about their lady parts and everything they do. The pages contain colorful illustrations and poetic descriptions of ovulation, menstrual supplies, birth control, and other things anyone with a vagina should know about, all with a positive outlook on women’s bodies and sexualities. “I’m a big sister and an aunt, and the idea of these girls I love living in a world where women feel shame about their bodies and their existence as women really put a fire under me,” Rolseth says. “I feel like women and girls don’t really talk about our genitals with each other, so all we have to go by is what we see in porn or on the Internet, and those images aren’t representative of what our bodies really look like.” Since sexuality—particularly women’s sexuality—is often a taboo topic, Rolseth is glad her zine has started a conversation on this topic. “Suddenly, a room full of people are talking about periods and

So, What Is Ghee, Exactly?
Kourtney Kardashian recently shared an unusual health tip on her website: She drinks ghee every morning. Um, what? “Ghee is the first thing I put in my body every morning,” Kardashian, 36, said. “I take one big teaspoon of ghee every morning and melt it on the stove in a pan and drink it out of a cute little ceramic white cup. After I take it, I don’t eat anything for 20 minutes, and then I drink a glass of water before eating food” If you’ve never heard of ghee before, you’re not alone. It’s a type of clarified butter that has origins in ancient India. It’s also believed to be good for your body and mind. And Kardashian is seriously on the ghee train. “In my kitchen, I only cook with ghee and coconut oil, and try to incorporate it into my meals as much as possible,” she says. “We make French toast, grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, basically anything we can with ghee.” According to Kardashian, ghee is a “healthy fat, like coconut oil, meaning the fatty acids are absorbed directly into the liver and burnt as energy.” Is this legit? Registered dietitian-nutritionist Karen Ansel, coauthor of The
