Donald Trump Jr. lashes out at President Obama

The eldest son of Republican nominee Donald Trump has accused President Barack Obama of stealing a phrase from his father’s RNC speech during his address in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Both speeches contained the line, “That’s not the America I know,” and Trump Jr. has not taken kindly to this.

Trump Jr. expressed his feelings via his Twitter page where he is quoted as saying, “I’m honoured that POTUS would plagiarise a line from my speech last week. Where’s the outrage? #DemsInPhilly.”

The accusation comes in the wake of criticism that was directed towards Trump Jr.’s stepmother, Melania Trump, who used a significant portion of her speech at the RNC from First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention address. That incident attracted a lot of criticism from all directions, and the Trump family struggled to contain the situation.

However, in order to turn the tide in a different direction, Trump Jr. has done his best to help his father’s election campaign. NBC News reports that Donald Trump’s son is technically correct, since both his father and the president used the same line at their respective conventions. However, it should also be noted that the line is something that has been used by other presidents in the past.

Moreover, unlike Melania and Michelle’s speeches, Obama and Trump’s speeches were completely different from one another.

In Cleveland, Trump Jr. said, “There’s so much work to do. We will not accept the state of our country because it’s too hard to change. That’s not the American I know. We’re going to unleash the creative spirit and energy of all Americans. We’re going to make our schools the best in the world for every single American of every single ethnicity and background.”

Obama, on the other hand, said: “What we heard in Cleveland last week wasn’t particularly Republican, and it sure wasn’t conservative. What we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other and turn away from the rest of the world. There were no serious solutions to pressing problems, just the fanning of resentment and blame and anger and hate. And that is not the America I know. The American I know is full of courage and optimism and ingenuity. The American I know is decent and generous.”

NBC News also highlighted that the president used the phrases “the America I know” and “not the America I know” on several platforms in the past. Moreover, it should also be noted that Obama isn’t the first president to have used this phrase,as President George W. Bush also used it. Prior to that, it was uttered in the media by journalist Walter Cronkite in 1998 and in 1995 by civil rights activist Julian Bond. It was also used by President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

However, Trump Jr. later cleared up the situation by stating that there was nothing serious about it. “No, but I did think it was funny. The overreaction is even more funny,” he wrote in response to a user asking him if he was being serious.
