It looks like Rihanna is finally in the mood to explore the magic and grandeur of the silver screen. The ‘We Found Love’ singer has joined the rich ensemble cast of Luc Besson’s epic, Valerian. The role which she is about to play has not been specified yet but, while making an announcement on his Instagram account, Luc Besson said that it is going to be a big one. The declaration makes her a part of an alluring cast that includes Kill Your Darlings star Dane DeHaan, Clive Owen and model turned actress Cara Delevingne. There is no denying that Rihanna is only going to add more excitement to the movie.
‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ is based on a French science fiction graphic novel series ‘Valerian and Laureline’ written by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières. The series focuses on the adventures of a dark-haired Valerian, a spatio-temporal agent and her red-headed colleague, Laureline as both of them travel across the universe through space and time. Valerian has all the traits of a classic hero. He is strong, powerful, intelligent, insightful and kind-hearted. The series was known for mixing space opera and time travel plots. Adter was the last issue in 2010. The magical series will now be revived into a movie and we feel Luc Besson can do it complete justice.
The role of Valerian will be played by Dean DeHaan and Laureline will have Cara Delevingne’s face. The cast will start filming in France next January and the movie is expected to hit theaters on July 21, 2017. Though, Rihanna’s role has been kept a secret, her fans are still rejoicing since you can never really have enough of her on screen.
The movie is based in the 28th century, the supposed time when humanity discovers time travel and it looks like the budget will be huge. It will have three elite visual effect firms working continuously to create the desired aura and charm. These include names like Weta Digital, Industrial Light & Magic and Rodeo FX.
Known and remembered for her infectious pop songs, Rihanna has been quite active on the silver screen as well. She recently starred in ‘Battleship’ and also lent her voice to the animated movie ‘Home’. Initially, Luc Besson was thinking to shoot the movie in Bucharest because French movies shot in English are not eligible for the Gauls tax rebate for local and international productions. But after some convincing, this highly influential filmmaker broke ground by pursuing the French government to draft and amend the bill. The amendment is now coined as ‘The Valerian Amendment’ and allows French movies made in English to get 30% tax rebate.
With an amazing director like Besson and the big names associated with the movie, expectations are high for the film. Besson’s last movie ‘Lucy’ starring Scarlett Johansson grossed $126 million in US and $458 worldwide. With Besson’s awesome portrayal of strong female characters, it will be interesting to see how he morphs Rihanna’s character in the movie. But we will have to wait till 2017 to witness the same.
