The legendary English footballer believes that the appointment of Patrick Vieira as New York City FC coach will put the club on the road to success.
The former France international officially took charge of NYCFC on January 1, and his appointment has been hailed as a major stroke by a player who now will be playing under him. Frank Lampard spent his last year in the Premier League at Manchester City, where Vieira used to work in a youth coaching capacity, and he is adamant that his new coach has what it takes to guide his club to glory in MLS.
Talking to reporters, Lampard hailed Vieira as one of the best midfielders of his time and is confident that he will be as successful when it comes to managing in the Premier League.
“I think it’s a great choice,” Lampard told ESPN.
Lampard added that having worked with him previously gives him extra benefit. He is looking forward to working under the tutelage of Vieira and has high hopes for the club in near future. The former Chelsea player revealed how Vieira has spoken to every player individually, and that shows how committed he is to his work here.
“I worked with him in Manchester for a year when he was working with the under-21s and I spoke to him at the back end of last season, when I think he spoke to every player one on one.”
Lampard, who won Premier League and Champions League titles during his time with Chelsea, is counting on the experience Vieira will bring with him to MLS. Praising the club’s new coach, Lampard said that Vieira was a great player, no doubt about that, and he has been working in a coaching capacity with Manchester City for a few years now.
“He’ll bring experience, he was a top player obviously and he’s been gaining experience as a coach in Manchester for a few years.”
The former England international said that all the players at NYCFC know very well who Patrick Vieira is, and they all have massive respect for him. He added that every single player of this team will give their best to make this club a success in Major League Soccer.
“The players will respect him and try to do our best for him and, as I say, let’s hope we can bring the club some success.”
Patrick Vieira is just 39 years old, which would be considered a very young age for a coach. However, there are little doubts in the minds of the players and bosses at the club that the former France international will be a great hit. Vieira has one FIFA World Cup and one UEFA European Championship to his name, along with several honors at the club level. He has won three Premier Leagues while playing for Arsenal along with four FA Cups for the Gunners and one FA Cup for Manchester City later in his career. He also won two Serie A titles for Inter Milan during his time in Italy.
