Kalamazoo shooting: Police name suspect in custody as Jason Dalton

Police has arrested a 45-year-old Jason Dalton after an overnight manhunt in Michigan with death toll believed to be six in total.

Police has arrested a man for random killings of at least six people at multiple locations in the city of Kalamazoo. Another couple of people sustained injuries including a 14-year-old girl, who is believed to be out of danger. Jason Dalton, the person behind the shooting was arrested at 12:40 am on Sunday by the Police, seven hours after the shooting incident.

According to police, they did not face resistance from Dalton upon his arrest and his was cooperative. A semi-automatic gun has been recovered from the killer which matches the description of the weapons used in Kalamazoo shooting. Kalamazoo county prosecuting attorney Jeff Getting told reporters during a press conference early on Sunday that it is a terrible thing happened here but added that the community should not stay in fear because they have the situation under full control. The shooter has been arrested and the justice will prevail. He further added that the police is adamant that it was a one person job and that person is now in custody.

“This is just the most awful thing I can think of having happening, and to have to stand here and talk about these kinds of things is just a terrible thing. There is no continuing threat to the safety of this community … we have no reason to believe there was more than one person involved in any of these incidents.”

Jeff Hadley, chief of Kalamazoo public safety stated that this seems to be random acts of violence and should be treated like so.

“These appear to be random acts of violence,” Hadley said.

And police has confirmed that Dalton had no previous known criminal record and the motive of his actions remains mysterious and unknown. According to the police, ugly scenes were witnessed after the shooting. A random guy going around and killing people for fun was pretty scary for the people of the city.

A woman was shot dead at around 6 pm on Saturday. She was babysitting outside an apartment complex in easter Kalamazoo county. She was shot several times but the children she was babysitting were not harmed. This was believed to be the first victim as hours later, a couple more people were shot dead outside a car dealership in Kalamazoo. The dead were believed to be father and son.

Matyas described the shootings as “our worst-case scenario”. Talking to reporters, he said that a number of agencies were involved in the investigation.

“It’s a very ugly scene – all of them,” he said. “All the agencies involved are mulling over it. I’ve been 40 years involved in police work, and I’ve seen a lot of grizzly scenes, but this one is ugly in that, this is just a guy going around randomly killing innocent people. That’s what makes this one so ugly.”
