The Broadcast Film Critics’ Association is returning to the Critics’ Choice name. It is to honor the movies and TV shows that excelled during that year. The last year has been quite unpredictable, and all the pre-Oscar awards are being watched closely. But one cannot draw comparisons between the Oscars and the Critics’ Choice Awards. They work their categories differently, and the basis of nominations is also different. However, the winner of the best-picture race is always watched closely, as they have been same in 11 of the past 15 years.
Critics’ Choice Awards initiate the pre-Oscar hustle and bustle
The Critics’ Choice Awards have set the tone for the Academy Awards. Though the movie categories have received disproportionate attention, the TV awards are jam packed. The awards also have a changed format. Previously, TV awards were given in June. But now, there is a new, combined format. As per this new format, television shows that aired primarily within the seven months from June 1 to December 31 are eligible for nomination. The awards have an extensive jury and also consist of nearly 300 reviewers from TV, radio, and social media networks. There is The Broadcast Television Journalists association that began a few years ago, and its first ceremony was held in 2011. There are a hundred voters, and as per the new configuration, movie critics will vote on the film awards, while TV reviewers will vote on TV.
“This is a new Golden Age in Hollywood, with a dazzling array of spectacular, delightful and illuminating films and programs to choose from,” said an enthusiastic BFCA/BTJA president Joey Berlin. The 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards will be produced by Bob Bain Productions and Berlin Entertainment.
